I love the Psalms that David wrote. They tell of the Awesome Wonder of his God and ours! I can never … NEVER … get enough of the Psalms. They uplift my soul and remind me how great is our God! He made each of us in such an intimate way. Psalm 139 speaks about how well God knows us. He knows us so intimately. Each one of us! There is so much in this one Psalm that it might take another series to go over each part. But as a whole it is an awesome Psalm talking about how wonderfully intimate our God knows us. There is so much awesome wonder about God. Here is an excerpt from this beautiful Psalm of David.
Psalm 139:13-18
“… 13 For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.
17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You. …”
You know folks use that word “awesome” a lot without realizing it or knowing its real definition! Here is what Merriam Webster says: Awesome: causing feelings of fear and wonder: causing feelings of awe: extremely good. Well, God is certainly that to me. The fear that is described here – at least I believe – is not the kind of fear when you are afraid of something bad. It is fear that comes with great respect and wonder. For example standing at the edge of town and watching a beautiful sunset with all the colors so magnificently displayed, or standing at the foot of Pikes Peak in Colorado and see the gigantic size of this huge rock coming out of the ground, or watching a tiny lady bug crawl across the leaf on a spring morning, or planting a tiny seed and after a time it growing into the most beautiful flower or vegetable… these bring the awe struck wonder to me. Then another part of that wonder is to know… KNOW… God created all of it! Everything! The gigantic to the tiny. God’s creation is filled with awesome wonder! How can anyone say there is no God is beyond me.

Then the next part of Merriam Webster’s description of awesome is “extremely good”. Well, we know God is good. A scripture comes to mind… Matthew 19:17 … the one that tells us about the rich, young ruler that comes to Jesus and asks
“Good[e] Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” Jesus replied… “Why do you call Me good?[f] No one is good but One, that is, God.”
Yes, we all know – or at least I would hope that we do – that God is Good … extremely good. So, Merriam’s description of awesome is one we can definitely describe God with. He causes fear and wonder, and awe and He is extremely good. I always love talking about how awesome God is. I can never exhaust the subject because God is inexhaustible. He has always been, He will always be. Maybe, today, you can think of ways you experience the awesome wonder of God. If you don’t share it with me, at least thank God for being such a great and awesome God. One that loves you so much. After all He calls you His beloved!
