ENCOUNTERING GOD ALMIGHTY

(Originally written 6-2014, so some content may be dated but the message is timeless)

I love the Psalms.  They uplift my soul and remind me how great is our God!  He made each of us in such an intimate way.  God is so … awesome… You know we use that word “awesome” a lot without realizing it or it’s real definition!  Here is what Merriam Webster says: Awesome: causing feelings of fear and wonder: causing feelings of awe  : extremely good.  Well, God is certainly that to me.  The fear that is described here – at least I believe – is not the kind of fear when you are afraid of something bad.  It is the fear that comes with great respect and wonder.   Standing at the edge of town and watching a beautiful sunset with all the colors so magnificently displayed, or standing at the foot of Pikes Peak and see the gigantic size of this huge rock coming out of the ground, or watching a tiny lady bug crawl across the leaf on a spring morning, or planting a tiny seed and after a time it growing into the most beautiful flower or vegetable… these bring the awe struck wonder to me.  God’s creation is awesome!  How can anyone say there is no God is beyond me.

Then the next part of that description is “extremely good”.  Well, we know God is good.  A scripture comes to mind… Matthew 19:17 … the one that tells us about the rich, young ruler that comes to Jesus and asks “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”  Jesus replied… “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.”  Yes, we all know – or at least I would hope that we do – that God is Good … extremely good.   So Merriam’s description of awesome is one we can definitely describe God with.  He causes fear and wonder, and awe and He is extremely good.

After reading the above two paragraphs that I wrote some time ago about how wonderful God is and praying about what to write tonight, for you tomorrow, my thoughts turn to my ride home from work tonight.  I was listening to Deuteronomy about when Moses dies.   Moses was a pretty special man. He was just a man – and I do not mean that disrespectfully – but God actually spoke to Moses face-to-face. Deuteronomy 34:10 – “10 But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face,”   In other parts of the story of Moses and the Israelites it talks about God’s presence being in the pillar of cloud and pillar of fire.  When Moses came down from the mountain, after speaking with God, the Bible says “… his face shone…”  This is the scripture – Exodus 34:29-35  “…29 Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him….” read more here.  Moses wore a veil over his face because of this and only removed it when he met with God.   His face was radiant after being in the Presence of Jehovah… God Almighty!

I began to think about that statement. To know God face-to-face… oh my goodness. When my mind tried to wrap around that statement, I felt a shortness of breath. It actually took my breath away to think of that encounter. Moses not only experienced that once, but time and time again over his many years in the wilderness wanderings with God Almighty! My heart raced and tears came to my eyes and my spirit soared. I felt lightheaded and … well, it was a very unusual feeling. I cannot imagine how Moses must have felt encountering God in this way.

This brings me to this statement… you cannot encounter God – on any level – and not be changed! Simple as that. No matter if you are experiencing a beautiful sunset, a rainbow, a little bug crawling across a leaf in the yard, the tiny baby birds in the nest, or the magnificence of the mountains and huge waterfalls. You are encountering God! Why? How? Because He created it ALL! You are being changed in some way. You are being touched inside. Your heart, soul, mind, and spirit are experiencing God’s creation and His wonderfulness – Awesomeness, if you will.  He has created all things for us to enjoy and learn about Him. We may never know God face-to-face, as Moses did, (on this side of Heaven) but we can encounter Him in the ways He has set before us.

I have encountered God in many ways in the last few years. He has opened Himself up to me in ways I never thought possible… or never thought about it at all. This blog that you are reading is one of those ways. He reveals to me what to write and share with you and I write. He speaks to my heart, and I write. He shows me ways that are encounters with Him throughout the day and I write. I read and listen to my Bible app and learn every day about who God is! I am hungry for the Word and His presence. His presence is so wonderful to me. I have been changed from the inside out. I am changing daily in ways that are unseen by others, but I know. I know that God is here and is changing me all the time. Encountering God… changes you even in the smallest of ways and sometimes in huge ways.  You cannot ever be in the Presence of Jehovah God and not be changed!

Maybe, today, you can think of ways you have experienced the awesomeness of God.  I challenge you today to ask God to reveal Himself to you. He will do it. He wants a relationship with you. You have to listen with your heart though. He will speak to you if you are willing. He is that still, small voice inside that comforts and brings a peace beyond understanding! He is there right where you are! Reach for Him today. He loves you so much, He calls you, His Beloved.
